This Thinkcar OBDII scanner is a very good mid-level scanner. This has a lot of the functions found on scanners costing thousands. Namely, it can scan and reset all systems, and has bi-directional scanning. On another similarly priced scan tool that I have, I have to pay a subscription fee, per vehicle, to have bi-directional scanning. This Thinkcar scanner has it already included. This is a good scanner for skilled enthusiasts looking for something more than just a code reader. I tested this on my 2017 GMC Sierra. It detected my VIN and other vehicle information automatically. However, I did have to manually select my correct transmission. The scanner correctly detected numerous faults, all of which are related to the installation of an aftermarket stereo system. I checked live data and it worked well. If you're buying a used car, this can save you a lot of headache by letting you know the overall health of the vehicle. I once paid a mechanic $230 to inspect a vehicle before I bought it. If you use this on a used car or two and make several vehicles repairs, that could more than cover the cost of this scanner.
I will not be able to test this on every make and model, so I can only speak based on my personal experience. The one thing I know that often sets the high-level scanners from the mid-level scanners, is the software. Although this Thinkcar scanner is supposed to scan and reset all systems, chances are there are some systems on some makes/models that you won't be able to reset. The high-level professional scanners have a higher likelihood of being able to reset a greater number of systems on more makes/models. And again, this is based on my personal experience. The issue is that you won't know if all the features are functional on your vehicle until you try it yourself. One great thing about this Thinkcar scanner is that you get free lifetime upgrades. This means that future software updates can enable functions that are not yet available. I have personally experienced this.
This Thinkcar scanner runs under its own power and needs to be charged (as opposed to the unit being powered on when plugged into the OBDII port). A charging cable is included, as well as different styles of wall plug adapters for use in other countries. This means that you can connect the unit to your Wi-Fi and run software updates from the comfort of your home. The included OBDII data cable needs to be attached. It attaches to the unit the same as any peripheral device cable attaches to a computer. The screen is clear. The power button is a physical power button. Everything else is run via the touchscreen, which performs well and is responsive. The system scan is not the fastest I've seen, but is good for this price range. Keep in mind that it will scan newer vehicles much faster than older vehicles. In my opinion, what you get for the price is very good. Generally speaking, scan tools priced over $400 up to $700 get a big jump in functionality. This is a product definitely worth considering for that price range, especially since it is a better known brand.
I recently ordered the Thinkcar OBD2 Scanner model TK672, and after using it on a couple of cars, I have to say I'm super impressed. First off, it's really easy to set up and the interface is pretty straightforward, even for someone who’s not super tech-savvy. I was able to hook it up to my Wi-Fi quite easily and perform an update on all the vehicles in the units database. It did take a while though, so I would be sure to plug it in while you do it. I only hit a snag with one vehicle manufacturers update that would not come through, but the ones I needed updated without a hitch.
The unit is supplied with a hard carrying case which is great for storage and the scanner itself has a flip out kick stand and tough rubberized corners, so if you were to drop it, it would likely survive the fall. It also ships with a USB cable, OBD data cable, and two extra plug facias, so it can be plugged into outlets in the US, UK, and I believe Europe.
It's really nice that the scanner offers free updates! others that I've seen you have to pay for. This feature alone in my opinion really stands the Thinkcar unit above the rest. It's jam packed full of features, I only scratched the surface with my two test vehicles.
I presently do not have any codes showing on my vehicles so I was mainly exploring some of its features. If my car throws a code anytime soon I will update my review.
Having a more advanced scanner like this is great as it features the bi-directional controls, which allows me to do more than just read and clear codes. I am able to run tests and activate certain components, like the fuel pump or cooling fans, which will save me time when trying to diagnose future issues
The full-system scan is also very comprehensive, and gives you access to all the main systems, engine, ABS, transmission, airbags, and more. I tested it on a Chevrolet and a Subaru, and it worked seamlessly across the board. The live data feature was another big plus. It shows real-time readings for various parameters, which in future will help pinpoint issues much faster.
For the price i'd say this is a lot cheaper than some units and puts in in a price range that is more affordable for small DIYers or small auto shops. The amount of functionality you get for 459.97 which is the price at time of my review, is outstanding, and the free lifetime updates, makes it a solid investment.
This is a very advanced scanner that was exactly what I was looking for. Its an android based tablet that can connect to the internet easily and even lets you use Chrome browser. It has a wealth of accessories and is suitable for worldwide use and comes with a case. Its got a rugged case and comes with a screen protector. It has a good database of cars and connected easily to my 2023 car. It can do deep diagnoses and reset a number of things like oil reset and TPMS. It reads pretty quickly but I did notice it works best when its connected to the internet. I was able to tether it to my iPhone and that did work well. It's difficult to assess its many functions but its clearly a high end scanner and code reader. The lifetime updates ensures that you'll stay up to date with new cars. It even offers a screen recording option and remote tech support so this is something that is basically commercial grade. Overall I am very impressed.
